I think as first responders we often undersell ourselves. We think about our skills and experience in the context of first responding and forget that the underlying skills we use to do our work are highly transferable to just about any civilian role and these skills are in high demand by employers. We just need to show that on paper.
I (nerdily) love helping first responders identify these transferable skills and map them over into job application documents to show your potential employer that you not only have the skills necessary to the job but that you're an excellent candidate.
What services do I offer?
I offer the following professional writing services for First Responders:
Resume Writing
I write tailored, contemporary, and Applicant Tracking System Friendly resumes that highlight your relevant skills and experience and map them directly against the role you're applying for.
If you have a particular position you're applying for, I'll write a resume that specifically 'talks to' that position and showcases your skills and experience, at the required level, that are relevant to the job.
If you don't have a particular position you're applying for yet but you know what industry or sector you'll be applying to, I'll write a 'source document' for you. This is a slightly longer and broader resume that you'll need to tweak and tailor slightly once you have a position description you're applying to - but I'll give you guidance on how to do this.
If you're applying for a specific position, you'll have a closing date that you working to. Just send an email to [email protected] before purchasing any of my writing services to make sure I have availability to meet your deadline.
Cover Letter Writing
I can also write you a professional and tailored cover letter to accompany your resume.
A cover letter is the first thing your prospective employer reads from and about you and it should make you stand out from the pile of other applications.
It should introduce you, explain your interest in the role, and should motivate your prospective employer to read and engage with your application.
Applicant Response Writing
I also offer Applicant Response writing services. Applicant response documents are essentially any documents that accompanies your resume and cover letter and can include:
- A response to Key Selection Criteria
- A Statement of Claims
- A Pitch
- An Expression of Interest
- A response to specific questions within the application
These are often 2 pages, or 500 words in length, and often include writing to a capability framework.
These are highly specified documents that map your skills and experience against the requirements of the role and often require specific examples of how you meet the role criteria.
How Does It Work?
Here's the process...
1. Once you purchase one of my writing package below, you'll receive an automated email asking you to provide the following information:
- A transcript of your service. Most internal HR systems allow you to download a transcript of your service which shows the dates you started a new role, transferred, performed relieving duties and progressed rank etc. If you don't have access to this, I'll just need the above information in dot-point.
- A copy of your current and previous resume (if you have one) and a copy of any Expression of Interest documents that you've submitted.
- A list of any awards, commendations or recognition you've received.
- Any significant achievements or highlights of your career.
- A copy of the position you're applying for or the industry/sector you'd like the documents tailored to.
If I'm writing an applicant response document for you, in addition to the above, I'll also need some specific work examples that I can write to, to address the required criteria. This is easiest done via a zoom meeting where we can chat about your experience and skills but can also be done via email if that's your preference.
2. Once I have all of the above information, I'll start drafting your documents and email you with any questions or requests for additional information as I'm writing.
There'll only be a couple of these emails and they won't take more than a couple of minutes to reply to but it's really important that you reply as soon as you can with the required information so I can continue the writing process and meet the timeline we agreed upon.
This process takes around 3-5 business days, depending on the number of documents required, how quickly you provide the initial information, respond to information requests and review the draft documents.
